About Us
Coastal Foodshed is proud to offer Young Family Farm products on their behalf. Please read the following excerpt from their website:
Our mission, as farmers and stewards of the land, is to grow safe, fresh and healthy food for our customers. Young Family Farm is many things to many people. In our community, we donate hundreds of thousands of food each year to the local food bank. Our retail stand features fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers that are sold from May through November.
We are also a destination farm in a small town of about 2,500. In the summertime, our numbers swell to include a vacation community made up of New Yorkers, Bostonians, Philadelphians and others from across the country and around the world who come here to enjoy what we have to offer. Our retail stand has grown since it opened officially in 2006, and our Pick-Your-Own and annual Apple Festival extend our business well into autumn.
Some people might not realize that Young Family Farm is also a production and wholesale farm. In fact, we are one of the three largest farms in all of Rhode Island. With 100 acres of our 300 acre farm dedicated solely to potatoes, we are able to feed people all over New England and our products are now sold at grocery stores throughout the northeastern states and at our retail stand.
We take pride in knowing that our hard work and passion for farming has enabled us to be so many things to so many different people. Serving the local community, creating a vacation destination for our seasonal visitors and having the opportunity to sell our products wholesale allows us to achieve our original goal to feed people and give them the safest, freshest and healthiest food available.
A Family Tradition
Our story begins in 1997 when Tyler and Karla Young purchased a beautiful piece of farmland in Little Compton, Rhode Island. With generations of farming in his blood, Tyler knew from a young age that farming was his passion. The couple jumped at the opportunity to purchase this land and support Tyler’s dream of growing fruits, vegetables and flowers for the local community.
When the very first strawberry crop was ready to be picked, the Young family decided to start selling their beautiful berries on a picnic table in their front lawn. Locals and summer visitors soon discovered the farm fresh berries, and Tyler was encouraged to begin growing a wider variety of vegetables to feed the “locavore” customers. Eventually, the Young Family Farm grew to be a small wholesale potato business, which later grew into the diversified wholesale and retail operation that it is today.
To Today
With the help of daughters Emma, Hattie and Sarah, the Young Family Farm’s roadside produce stand soon grew too large for the front yard. So in 2006, the family worked to launch a retail farm stand, just in time for the first apple crop. Now the products that Tyler grows and the family sells can be found at grocery stores throughout New England and also at the family’s retail stand on West Main Road in Little Compton, RI.
From planting to picking, Young Family Farm is in full operation from March through November. We open the doors to our retail stand in May and keep them open through Thanksgiving to provide our customers with the freshest produce and products to share and enjoy with their families. During the retail season, our “locavore” customers enjoy our farm fresh annuals, perennials, fruits, vegetables and various events, including our annual Apple Festival and Pick-Your-Own opportunities.
